Building A Holistic Home: Mindset
Introduction
I’ve only been a naturally minded mama for 6 years. To a lot of you, that probably sounds like a fairly short amount of time. But I’ve found some ways to help me really prioritize what to swap, what’s worth spending money on, and I want to help you so your journey to low tox, holistic living can be as stress free as possible.
So I have some tips for you on making better swaps for your home and building your holistic medicine cabinet WITHOUT feeling like your house is killing you.
I'm going to break this up into 3 PARTS so it's more digestible.
I.) Mindset around making low tox swaps
2.) Supplements and tinctures I think everyone needs to have on hand
3.) Tools and books to start collecting to build a home apothecary so you’re prepared for anything
Today we will focus on MINDSET
Mindset Begins
The best advice I can give you is to make one swap at a time.
When your salt runs out, replace it with Redmond's or Himalayan pink salt.
When your deodorant runs out, replace it with aluminum free.
When your windex runs out, grab a pack of Ecloth window rags from Amazon.
Every single "better" swap you make is one less drop in your toxin bucket that we are trying to keep from overflowing. That’s the whole goal. Keep the bucket from spilling over. Toxins should be going out the spout at the bottom faster than they are getting poured in the top. When it spills over, we see symptoms. That’s how you know it’s time to make some changes.
Here’s the first and most important reminder:
Your house is NOT killing you.
READ THAT AGAIN.
When I first started waking up to the toxic world we live in, I spiraled baaaad.
It felt like my whole house was toxic.
The materials used to build it.
The food in my pantry.
The medicines in the cupboard.
The air in our home.
The water in the faucets.
The fibers of our clothes.
Every product had some kind of fragrance.
Even our lawn was full of toxins.
Your house is NOT killing you.
Neither are your clothes, your air, your water, or any of it.
Are the toxins good? No, obviously not.
But our bodies WANT to heal. They CAN heal!
But they won’t if our nervous system is a constant wreck, wound up by the stress that trying to live perfectly clean can bring!! That’s just as toxic as the things we’re trying to avoid!!
God created us with a unique ability to adapt, to get rid of what doesn’t belong, and He created us with bodily functions that show up as symptoms, telling us what’s wrong.
What symptoms IS your family dealing with?
Breathing problems or mold exposure?
Start there. Air filters, anti fungal herbs, and lung support herbs might be a good place to start.
Skin issues, allergies, asthma, or all of the above?
Start replacing fragrance heavy products with cleaner swaps, and dive into gut health.
Maybe you’re dealing with a wound up nervous system.
Always feeling tense, on edge, and deal with chronic pain?
It might be a good idea to look into ways you can lower EMF in your home, chiropractic care, and maybe homeopathy to help you feel calm and relaxed.
Do you see where I’m going with this?
What is important to focus on will be different for every family. While one person might be really concerned about filtering every drop of water that comes into their home, the next might be finding they need natural fiber sheets to sleep on because their sleep is disrupted and miserable. And the next mom might just be desperate to get her child’s eczema under control which is a whole different category of stuff to focus on.
So step 1:
Evaluate your family’s symptoms
Learn what is triggering them
Build a plan around your specific situation
building a holistic medicine cabinet
Now let’s talk specifically about building a holistic medicine cabinet for when your kids (or you!) are sick.
Because there are THOUSANDS of things out there for you to pick from.
These are my two guideline questions that will help you narrow down where to start:
What illnesses is your family most prone to?
What illnesses are you most afraid of?
Start purchasing things for the sicknesses your family is most prone too so you’re prepared!
Some families always get the stomach flu.
For some, it's the coughs.
For some, it's illness that goes straight to the lungs.
Use my Instagram highlights @Becca.Naturally, and purchase the things I recommend for each illness, focusing, as your budget allows, on the things you deal with in your family the most. If you’ve heard me or someone else talk about a certain supplement or a certain tincture and it’s nagging in the back of your mind that you would like to have it on hand for your family, listen to that push and add it to your list to purchase when your budget allows!
Along those same lines, as you walk through a situation where you wish you would have had a specific homeopathic remedy or tincture or tool on hand, write it down on a list. Purchase the things you wish you would have had as your budget allows, so you're prepared for next time.
This is how I am building my homeopathic remedy collection!
Building around your main concern
Now the next thing…
What illnesses are you the most worried about?
Which ones make you feel panicky when you see your kiddo getting sick?
Once you have under control the supplements and tools you want on hand for the things your family deals with often, now you'll focus on the things you're worried about.
Feel panicky when your kiddo spikes a fever?
Terribly worried about pneumonia or maybe RSV?
Maybe vomit is your worst fear?
Now use my guides and highlights to get informed about the illness, and stock up on the things you need for those situations.
Using this method, you will go from being a scared mama, to a prepared mama, and THAT my friends?
That is an empowered and CONFIDENT mama.
It took me almost 6 years to fully stock my medicine cabinet, replace my home products, and clean up the pantry (which is always a work in progress lol).
This is a slow process.
Don't go into debt.
Don't let perfectionism freeze your efforts.
And don't let the overwhelm become toxic stress.
Breaking it down like this and making lists in a notebook in my kitchen drawer has really helped me stay on target and make wise financial choices while swapping our home over to low tox products and getting prepared for when our kids get sick!
