Designed for the Change: A Metabolic and Spiritual Guide to Perimenopause

There is a common whisper in our culture that tells women the transition into the "second half" of life is a slow slide into irrelevance. We’ve been conditioned to view perimenopause as a biological glitch… a season defined by shame, exhaustion, and "just getting through it."

But I want to offer you a different perspective.

God did not design the Autumn of your life to be a season of decay. In His brilliant design, the transition of perimenopause is intended to be a period of holy refinement. A "harvest" season where the noise of our younger years quiets so that deeper wisdom and spiritual authority can rise. If you feel like your body is a stranger to you right now, it’s not because God’s design failed; it’s because our modern environment has disrupted the rhythm He placed within us.

The Timeline: Common vs. Normal

Many of you have reached out to me saying, "I’m only 34, why am I having hot flashes?" or "I’m 38 and my rage is uncontrollable." We need to have a honest conversation about the timeline. While the transition into perimenopause is a natural biological shift, God designed it to be a gradual process that typically begins in the mid-to-late 40s.

If you are experiencing a hormonal "crash" in your 30s, it is common, but it is not normal.

What we often call "early perimenopause" is actually metabolic dysfunction. High stress, blood sugar instability, and environmental toxins are "hacking" our hormonal timelines, triggering symptoms of "the change" a decade too soon. It’s not that you are aging too fast; it’s that your metabolic engine is signaling for help.

The Science of the Struggle

To steward our bodies well, we have to understand how they work. Our hormones don't live in a vacuum; they respond to the "safety" of our environment.

1. The Cortisol-Progesterone "Steal"

In God’s design for survival, your body will always prioritize "fight or flight" over "rest and digest." When we live in a state of chronic metabolic stress, our body "steals" the resources meant to make Progesterone (your calm, pro-gestation hormone) to make more Cortisol (your stress hormone).

  • The Result: Anxiety, heavy cycles, and insomnia. Your body is sacrificing your peace to keep you "safe" from perceived stress.

2. The Brain Fog & Fuel Crisis

Your brain is an energy-intensive organ. When we have unstable blood sugar or insulin resistance, the "fuel delivery" to our brain cells is interrupted. That "fog" you feel isn't just aging—it’s your brain struggling to access the energy it needs to function.

Stewardship as an Act of Worship

1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Stewardship isn't about chasing a number on a scale; it’s about maintaining the vessel so we can fulfill our calling.

To reclaim your rhythm, we have to address the Metabolic Big Three:

  • Stable Fueling: Stop the glucose roller coaster. Prioritizing protein and healthy fats tells your nervous system that "the harvest is plenty" and there is no need for a survival response.

  • Strategic Rest: You cannot heal a body that is constantly in "survival mode." Prayer and the Sabbath are not just spiritual suggestions; they are metabolic requirements for hormonal balance.

  • Strength as Foundation: Muscle is a metabolic "sink" for excess blood sugar. Building strength honors the body God gave you and protects your health for the decades of ministry ahead.

From Crisis to Commissioning

If you are in the thick of the struggle, hear this: Your symptoms are not your enemy. They are messengers. They are God’s way of saying, "Slow down. Look at the temple. Let’s refine this so you can run the rest of your race with endurance."

Perimenopause is the hallway to a season of great spiritual authority. As our physical "busy-ness" shifts, we are invited to become like the Titus 2 woman—full of wisdom, sober-minded, and ready to mentor the next generation.

You aren't losing yourself. You are being prepared for what is next.

What’s Next?

Don't let the "Change" be a crisis. Let it be the moment you finally decide to steward your health the way God intended.

Join me next week as we move forward in the journey. We’ve talked about the transition; next, we tackle the fullness of the new season: Menopause.
