🍄 Renewing Your Taste Buds, Reclaiming Your Health: How Christian Women Can Retrain Their Palates & Care for Their Bodies
Sis, let’s have a real conversation because avoiding the foods that actually nourish us is NOT the abundant life Jesus talked about in John 10:10. And yet so many women of God are walking around saying:
“Yuck, I hate mushrooms.”
“I could never eat that.”
“My body just doesn’t like healthy food.”
But what if I told you…
💥 Your taste buds are not fixed.
💥 Your dislikes aren’t lifelong sentences.
💥 And your palate can be retrained just like your mindset.
God designed your body with incredible adaptability. The same mind you renew spiritually (Romans 12:2) can also be renewed physically, especially when it comes to how you taste, crave, and enjoy food.
Let’s dive deep into why this matters, and how simple changes can radically shift your energy, gut health, brain clarity, and overall wellbeing.
I’m going to share about mushrooms but replace this item with any vegetable you’ve turned your nose at when you began having a choice about what to eat.
As a child we never ate mushrooms. So when I was introduced to them as an adult and experienced the unique texture and even more unique flavor I very quickly shunned them into the darkest region of food choices and never looked back.
UNTIL… I began learning about the gut benefits of this food. And then around the same time I began my health coaching training and learned the science behind retraining your tastebuds as an adult.
✨ Why Your Taste Buds Need Discipleship Too
First, taste isn’t just biology. It’s memory, repetition, exposure, and conditioning.
Most of us “decided” we hated foods before we hit puberty.
But you are not the same girl you were at 11.
You are a grown woman.
And your palate has grown, too.
What really happens?
Our taste buds get hijacked by hyper-palatable, artificially flavored, dopamine-spiking foods.
Your brain gets hooked.
Your palate becomes stubborn.
And suddenly whole, God-made foods taste “boring.”
That’s not truth.
That’s training.
And anything trained can be retrained.
🌿 3 Ways to Retrain Your Palate as an Adult
These are the same principles that work for toddlers—because sis, your brain learns the same way theirs does. Repetition + exposure + belief.
1️⃣ Increase Your Number of Exposures
Science shows it takes 8–15 exposures for kids to accept a new food.
Guess what?
Adults are the exact same.
Stop assuming you dislike something because you didn’t like it as a kid.
Try it again.
Prepared differently.
Seasoned differently.
In small portions.
You wouldn’t expect transformation without repetition in your spiritual life—same goes here.
2️⃣ Try the Food in Different Preparations (This is the key!)
Let’s be real… some people think they “hate mushrooms” because the only mushroom they ever tasted was:
❌ raw
❌ slimy
❌ or unseasoned
NOT on my watch, sis 😭💀🍽
Mushrooms transform with heat, seasoning, and technique.
🍄 Delicious Ways to Prepare Mushrooms
These will convert even the pickiest palate:
🔥 Garlic Butter Sautéed Mushrooms (my favorite!)
– Sauté in butter
– Add garlic powder, onion powder, dash of sea salt
– Let them brown (no stirring!)
🌿 Herb-Roasted Mushrooms
– Toss with avocado oil
– Coat in onion powder, garlic powder, rosemary, smoked paprika
– Roast at 425° until caramelized
🍄 Balsamic Glazed Mushrooms
– Sauté with onions
– Add balsamic vinegar, coconut aminos, and cracked black pepper
– Let it reduce to a sticky glaze
🥘 Add them INTO dishes
– Pasta sauce
– Stir fry
– Tacos
– Soups
– Omelets
– Grain bowls
Sometimes you don’t need mushrooms to be the star.
You just need them in the cast. 😉
3️⃣ Speak Life Over Your Plate
Sis… THIS is the one most people skip.
Your brain listens to your words more than your taste buds.
As you’re eating foods that support your health, speak this out:
⭐ “I enjoy this food because it nourishes my body.”
⭐ “My tastes are changing to align with what supports my health.”
⭐ “My body is learning to love what loves it back.”
This is not woo-woo.
This is literally She Is Confident mindset work.
This is Scripture-backed (Proverbs 18:21).
This is brain retraining.
This is spiritual + physical alignment.
Your taste buds will follow your words if your words lead the way.
✨ Why This Matters for Christian Women
Sis… your health isn’t vanity.
It’s stewardship.
God entrusted you with a body to carry out your calling, your motherhood, your ministry, your purpose, your assignments.
Food either fuels that… or fights that.
Healing your palate is one of the most loving, Spirit-led ways you can honor the vessel God gave you.
And you don’t have to overhaul your diet in one day.
You just have to be willing to try again, try differently, and speak life as you do.
Your body was created to heal.
Your mind was created to renew.
Your palate was created to adapt.
And YOU were created to walk in vibrant, abundant health.
